Sun Protection, Choice and Use

Published On: 20 July 2021

Summer months very often begin with thinking of purchasing sunscreens.

However, we do not always know the qualities to be evaluated for the choice of the right product.

Surely it can be very important to locate the correct SPF value for our skin type.

It is therefore interesting to understand how the sun protection factor is defined.

The calculation of the sunscreen factor is standardised in the 1970s and calculates the ratio between the MED (minimum erythematogenic dose) of a protected area and a non-produced area.

NOWADAYS THE LABORATORY TESTS TO DETERMINE THE SPF VALUE ARE BASED ON THE SAME CONCEPT, WITH METHODOLOGIES OBVIOUSLY IMPLEMENTED AND CUTTING-EDGE MACHINERY SUCH AS THE SPF TESTING 601 MULTIPORT® UV SOLAR SIMULATOR WHICH COMPLIFE MAKES USE OF, TO OFFER A FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT SERVICE TO ITS CUSTOMERS.

Once the appropriate protection factor has been chosen, it is necessary to consider that there is also a correct amount to be applied to the skin, the same that is used for the evaluation of the product in the context of laboratory tests and that corresponds to about 36 grams of product, considering the body of an average adult.

This amount will be applied to the skin several times a day and approximately every 2 hours, as well as after showers, baths, sweating.

Complife is enrolled in the program of proficiency test (BIPEA) for the evaluation of the SPF placing itself among the most performing and qualified laboratories in the sector: a recognition of the quality of the proposed tests and transparency of the results obtained.
