How’s the Skin Under the Mask?

Published On: 1 June 2021

For over a year they have become part of our daily life and are confirmed as one of the most valid safeguards to face the spread of the virus Sars-Cov-19, but especially with the arrival of heat, masks can increase the incidence of dermatological problems.
Clinical studies – explains Prof. Gabriella Fabbrocini, SIDeMaST Councillor – have recently highlighted that wearing masks continuously and for a prolonged time would sharpen acne and/or other irritations of the skin pre-existing or latent. In fact, 90% of patients attribute the worsening of acne and rosacea to the use of the mask and 30% declare that the disease has latentized or exacerbated due to the same.
The Italian Society of Medical, Surgical, Aesthetic and Sexually Transmitted Dermatology – SIDeMaST – has drawn up a handbook to limit dermatological problems resulting from the prolonged and systematic use of masks:
1. Always wear white CE certified masks, in natural or hypoallergenic fabrics that can help the skin to breathe, avoiding masks in synthetic fabrics;
2. Regularly change/wash the mask, using neutral detergents or organic and hypoallergenic products;
3. Try to avoid makeup if you know you have to wear the mask for a prolonged period;
4. To give maximum care to the choice of products for the cleaning and hydration routine;
5. In the morning, when you wake up, start a targeted cleansing with detergents slightly more acidic and sebum-regulating, but always delicate. Then apply non-comedogenic topical products and make them absorb completely before wearing the mask. Skin hydration is essential, better to apply the cream then at least thirty minutes before wearing the mask;
6. With the arrival of summer do not forget a solar filter because the sun’s rays also pass through the fabrics. Today there are very light spray versions that cancel the feeling of heaviness;
7. To prevent abrasion or irritation, hydrocolloid dressing may be used to be placed under the eyelids or on the back of the nose;
8. If the inflammation should occur, contact the dermatologist immediately;
9. Pay attention to the diet, avoiding too much sugar and alcohol and opting for a diet that retraces the healthy habits of the Mediterranean diet.
