Skin Color Measurements and the Objectivation of Skin Pigmentation

Published On: 25 August 2020

The colour of skin is determined by its melanin content, its oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin contents and the amount of endogenous or exogenous pigments such as bilirubin and carotene.

The measurement of skin colour is of great importance for the clinicians involved in cosmetic fields. Indeed, the non-invasive measurement of epidermal melanin content is necessary in studies on humans that implicate skin depigmentation.

Skin erythema values are considered as an index of inflammation, dermal vasodilatation and are the main outcome in a lot of dermatological studies.

Different instruments and clinical score are available to quantify and characterize this parameter: Mexameter® MX 18, Skin Glossymeter® GL 200, Skin-Colorimeter® CL 400, Skin spectrophotometer Konica Minolta CM-700d, VISIA® Skin Analysis System, as well as descriptive, photographic and visual-analogue scales.
